As Managing Director of Pico Play, a Gold Coast-based company delivering world-class theme parks and entertainment destinations across Asia, the Middle East and Australia, Darren McLean leads a team of “Fun-Makers” who blend creativity, engineering, and storytelling to craft unforgettable guest experiences.

A 2003 Griffith graduate with a double degree in Civil Engineering and Business Management, Darren credits the University’s innovative double degree program for shaping his career. “I knew I wanted to do something design-based and technical, but I also wanted to be an entrepreneur,” he says. “That combination of engineering and business gave me the foundation to think creatively while understanding the practical realities of delivering projects.”

From spotlighting the grounding serenity of nature at Singapore Zoo to fueling sky-high adrenaline spikes at Movie World, Pico Play embrace creative storytelling, immersive design and high-quality fabrication to bring joy to millions.

Over the years, Darren has overseen the delivery of attraction projects in 15 countries. But for him, the most rewarding moments happen close to home. “Seeing families and friends enjoying something you’ve built—it’s hard to beat that feeling.”

Beyond his professional success, Darren is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of designers and engineers. He regularly shares insights with university students, offering a grounded perspective on leadership and communication in industry. “Technical skills are vital, but what really sets people apart is their ability to communicate,” he notes. “The most successful people I’ve worked with can express ideas clearly and bring others along with them.”

Darren’s story reflects the spirit of Griffith’s alumni community—innovative, collaborative, and committed to giving back. Whether he’s building attractions or shaping careers, Darren continues to inspire others to dream big, stay curious, and lead with purpose.
